5,000 Northwest Ohio residents will be joining together at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 3.1 mile walk to help create a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays. This noncompetitive event unites the entire community to celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk or find the disease early, and raise funds to end the disease. This year’s event hopes to raise more than $130,000, which supports the Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures and fighting back against breast cancer. While the for-profit sector saw declining demand for products and services in the economic downturn, the opposite was true for organizations like the American Cancer Society who saw demand for their patient services increase in the past year. Funds raised by events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are critical in meeting the needs of breast cancer in the community. No one knows how vital those services are more than Alicia Pangrac, a local breast cancer survivor and volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study 3 research event. Cancer Prevention Study 3 or CPS 3 builds on a proud history of American Cancer Society-sponsored follow up studies, starting in the 1950’s, that have provided invaluable insights into the causes of cancer and the steps people can take to prevent the disease. “I am an eight year breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at the age of 28. As you can imagine, going through cancer treatment is a very scary thing. I know that my husband, family, and friends often felt like they could do little to help me. I sometimes felt pretty helpless myself. Being involved with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has given all of us a sense of empowerment. Through our involvement, we can help others beat this disease.” ?Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is just one way the American Cancer Society is creating a world with less breast cancer and more birthdays in the Toledo region. The Society is helping local women stay well by arming them with the knowledge they need to take control of their breast health. The Society is helping people get well by connecting them to free resources that guide them through every step of the cancer experience. The American Cancer Society is currently supporting 2 research grants at the University of Toledo Medical Center, representing an investment of almost $2 million. Finally, the Society works with Ohio legislators to fight back, passing laws to defeat breast cancer and rallying local communities to join the fight. “Cancer does not go away in tough economic times,” said Anita Dunipace, the American Cancer Society's Regional Vice President for Ohio’s Northwest Region. “We are so thankful for how this community has pulled together to ensure that we can continue to serve breast cancer patients and their families here in the Toledo area.” This year, Toledo’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is one of more than 165 held across the country. Dollars raised support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives and create more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against cancer. As a result, more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors will celebrate a birthday this year. Sponsors of this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Northwest Ohio event include: The University of Toledo Medical Center, Savage & Associates, First Federal Bank, First Solar, The Thompson Williams Group at Merrill Lynch, The Town Center at Levis Commons, NBC 24, 101.5 the River and 92.5 Kiss FM. About the American Cancer Society: The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year.
