Comedy for a Cause - Independent Advocates Truth Comedy Jam
Comedy For a Cause: Independent Advocates Truth Comedy Jam
Toledo, Ohio
March 7, 2011--
Independent Advocates and the Truth Gallery proudly serve up a night of comical performances with a healthy side dish of social awareness. The first-ever Independent Advocates Truth Comedy Jam runs on Monday, March 21 from 7-9 p.m. at the Truth Gallery, 1811 Adams Street in Uptown Toledo.
Headlining the event is stand-up comedienne, actress, and Lady of Improv, Luce Tomlin-Brenner (a.k.a. LTB). Hailing from Washington DC, LTB's comedy is strongly rooted in feminism, sex and general lady problems. A diverse and inclusive performer, LTB has won over the hearts of fans and critics in the DC area and beyond with original sets like Girl What Are You Suckling At? and the crowd-pleasing favorite In Da Indoors. LTB's material is suitable for a mature audience (18+ welcome), and resonates with socially-minded men and women alike. Following up a week-long comedy tour throughout Ohio, LTB performs in Toledo for this special night of laughter and activism. Joining the evening's full line-up are funny women Kate Brindle, and Elissa Marcus.
To coincide with a talented bill of foxy feminists, the event aims to boost awareness and raise money to benefit the local non-profit agency, Independent Advocates. Founded in 2007 by Rebecca Facey and Rachel Richardson, IA grew out of a need to fill gaps in services provided to survivors of domestic violence in the Toledo/Lucas County Court system. The comprehensive court advocacy program was IA’s flagship program and the agency has now evolved into a vehicle for social change and a leader in the local movement to stop domestic violence. Their mission is to improve the community’s response to domestic violence. In the past three years, IA has served over 300 women in the court system and has provided community education to thousands through presentations, a Public Service Announcement, and promotional materials all reminding the community that “It’s OUR responsibility to STOP domestic violence!”
The pairing of Independent Advocates and LTB was obvious and necessary to mutual fans and supporters. LTB's stand-up routines and IA's mission statement go hand in hand.
“I have spent years working for different sexual assault and domestic violence advocacy programs,” LTB said. “Eradicating violence against women is one of my biggest interests and concerns.”
The Independent Advocates Truth Comedy Jam is scheduled for Monday, March 21 from 7-9 p.m. The space at 1811 Adams Street has been generously donated for the cause by Fletcher Word of the Truth Gallery. Admission is $10 in advance, and $15 at the door. For more information, please visit the Independent Advocates Truth Comedy Jam on Facebook.
