Lourdes Launches Lecture Series Featuring the Arts
The Department of Art at Lourdes is pleased to announce the launch of a new lecture series. The Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak Lecture Series, which kicks off on March 27, will feature presentations on a variety of topics related to the arts, beginning with the work of the series namesake, Sr. Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF.
The purpose behind the series is to give students an opportunity to learn from and communicate directly with individuals working in art related fields. “We really want to show our students that you can indeed have a career in the arts,” shares Department of Art Chair Erin Palmer Szavuly.
Sr. Jane Mary is an accomplished professor and artist. After teaching at Cardinal Stritch High School for 14 years, she joined the Lourdes community, where she served for nearly 30 years as Assistant Professor for the Department of Art. Her ceramic and mural works are on display across the nation, from Texas to California to Ohio.
Alumnus George Brymer ('10, Master of Organizational Leadership; '08, Individualized Studies) and his wife Vicky worked closely with Erin Palmer Szavuly to design and launch the series?
"We wanted to establish the lecture series in order to draw attention to Sr. Jane Mary's legacy,” shares George, who took her Calligraphy course his senior year. “She was a passionate and inspiring instructor. She encouraged me to give my best in class – and challenged me to make my best even better. Sr. Jane Mary had an incredible impact on me during my final summer at Lourdes. For an instructor to affect a student so profoundly – well that is truly saying something,” ?
The inaugural Sr. Jane Mary Sorosiak Lecture Series will be held in the Franciscan Theatre & Conference Center from 2 to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. For more information on the series, contact Erin Palmer Szavuly at 419-824-3685 or email [email protected]. Reservations for the lecture are required by March 18.
