Thirteenth Annual Aluminum Beverage Can 'Roundup'

Posted: Friday, April 1, 2011 by: Trinidad Rodriguez | Category: General News

Aluminum Cans for Burned Children, or ACBC, is a non-profit children’s organization, which accepts aluminum beverage cans for the purpose of recycling them for charity. ACBC’s aluminum can recycling program is conducted by northwest Ohio firefighters and local businesses to raise funds for the benefit of children admitted to the burn unit at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
In an effort to promote recycling, Earth Day, ACBC and the good deeds of children, we are asking area organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other youth groups to help us in our annual drive. The particulars of this undertaking consists of the following: your group is being asked to collect or roundup aluminum cans using any method you can think of. Whether you chose to conduct a door-to-door campaign, do a community area cleanup, a school project or some other type of can collecting drive is up to you. After that, your group is urged to drop off their collected cans or bags of cans on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Toledo Zoo (in the parking lot area off of the Anthony Wayne Trail entrance) between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. ACBC will have a drop-off point set-up with representatives during the before mentioned time frame and the Toledo Zoo will have a small army of young volunteers from its ZooTeen Program to accept your donations.
ACBC volunteers always look forward to being invited back to be “good stewards of the environment” and participate in the zoo’s annual “Party for the Planet” celebration in conjunction with their Earth Day activities. Our ultimate goal is match our accomplishment from 2009 and fill a large dumpster with more than 1,560 pounds of aluminum cans.

For the last 12 years, our Earth Day project has had many benefits for everyone involved, such as:
For ACBC: Benefits area burned children, supports burn prevention education programs, brings about an awareness of our cause to the public, funds juvenile firesetter programs, and raises money for charity.
For youth group organizations and scouts: Serves as a good deed, teaches young children about recycling, full-fills certain requirements in scouting achievement books, and serves as “an opportunity for our youth to ‘think globally’ and ‘act locally’ to preserve and improve our environment.”

Other benefits consist of the following: Reduces litter or helps to control litter, serves as a community cleanup, lessens the demands on landfill space, and conserves energy (making an aluminum can from recycled aluminum uses a fraction of the energy needed to make a new aluminum can).

In order for this campaign to be successful, we need your help and cooperation. So, please consider this challenge and start making plans to participate today. No formal reservations are required, just show up at the Toledo Zoo on Saturday April 16, 2011 with your bags of cans and help us celebrate Earth Day. ACBC offers its thanks in advance for your efforts; your generosity and support will greatly benefit the ACBC program.
