E-Books from the Library on Kindle Coming Soon
(April 21, 2011) – If you are an Amazon Kindle user, or are considering purchasing one, we're sure you've heard the exciting news that "later this year" Amazon plans to join a library loan program for electronic books.
Amazon announced the news yesterday that the company will eventually participate in an electronic book-loaning program managed by the company OverDrive. This will allow public library patrons with Kindles to check out e-books from their library.
Officials of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library said they are "thrilled" at Amazon's recent news. Currently, TLCPL patrons with the Barnes and Noble NOOK or the Sony Reader can already download e-books from the library's Web site toledolibrary.org. Up to 10 items can be virtually checked out via the Library's Downloadable Media page.
"We've waited a long time for this," said Tracy Montri, manager of the Library's AudioVisual department, of Amazon's recent announcement. "We can't wait for this feature to become a live option for our library patrons with Kindles. Our patrons with Barnes and Noble Nooks and Sony Readers already are enjoying downloading free e-books from the Library!"
According to CNN Tech page on CNN.com, Amazon did not release a specific launch date, but did say that they would join OverDrive "later this year." The free e-books will be available through Kindle apps on smartphones and on the Kindle e-reader.
Please visit the Library's Downloadable Media page on toledolibrary.org to learn more about FREE downloading to your current electronic devices.
