Happy 8th Birthday Louie!
Toledo, Ohio—It’s hard to believe that The Toledo Zoo’s biggest little guy, Louie the elephant, is already eight years old! On Saturday, April 30, the Zoo will celebrate this momentous occasion with all sorts of birthday fun.
The party gets started at 10:30 a.m. as Louie tears into his presents. At 1:30 p.m. Louie will get to enjoy a special birthday cake made just for him. It’s full of his favorite treats and is prepared by the Zoo’s Catering Department. Plus the first 1,200 kids will receive Little People birthday crowns from Fisher-Price!
The Zoo is preparing for what they hope to be another successful elephant birth, as Louie’s mother Renee is expected to deliver a calf in early summer. The new state-of-the-art elephant facility will go a long way toward ensuring that Louie, Renee, the new calf, and adult female Twiggy will receive the best care possible. Thanks to the voters of Lucas County and contributors to the Zoo’s Capital Campaign, the first phase of the facility is completed, and the second phase will be operational in 2012. This new exhibit—and events like Louie’s birthday celebrations—enable visitors to get an up-close perspective on these majestic animals, and in the process the Zoo hopes that folks will be inspired to care for these elephants’ wild counterparts. The Toledo Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends in May) and is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo.
