TOLEDO, Ohio – April 26, 2011 – The Veterans’ Glass City Skyway (VGCS) tribute memorial – honoring those who contributed to building the Skyway and the five tradesmen who lost their lives during its construction – will be dedicated at 5 p.m. this Thursday, April 28, coinciding with National Workers’ Memorial Day.

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur will open the ceremony by welcoming attendees, including the general public, union members and the VGCS tribute committee.

“This dedication ceremony concludes a project more than seven years in the making,” says John Crandall, VGCS tribute committee co-chair, “Community members were involved in every step of the way – from the centerpiece selection to the personalized bricks lining the park. It’s time for the community to enjoy our efforts.”

The ceremony will reflect on the lives of five tradesmen: Andrew Burris, Arden Clark II, Robert Lipinksi Jr., Michael Moreau and Michael Phillips, and will include remarks from Rev. Kenneth Burris, father of Andrew Burris; Marc Folk, Executive Director of the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo; artist Even Lewis; John Crandall; and union leadership.

Located in Tribute Park, the memorial will stand on the south side of the bridge, directly aligned with the Skyway’s defining center pylon. Designed by Lewis, the sculpture includes a stainless steel tower standing on four concrete columns. The centerpiece rises above the tower and consists of two kinetic elements in continuous motion, symbolizing the tireless efforts of those who contributed to building the Skyway.

Directly beneath the centerpiece will be a space dedicated to reflection and meditation, connecting visitors to the great community effort put forth to complete the Skyway. Surrounding the sculpture will be the personalized bricks, pavers and benches funded by community donations.

Tribute Park is located in East Toledo on Front Street, between Dearborn Avenue and Craig Bridge Street. For more information, please contact Dan Hernandez, Arts Commission of Greater Toledo, at 419-254-2787.
