Detroit Mayor Whistle-Blower to Visit Library
(Released May 11, 2011) – New author Walter L. Harris, Jr., a former Detroit Police officer and bodyguard of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, is scheduled to appear in Toledo to discuss his debut book Badge of Honor Blowing the Whistle: The True Story of a Mayor’s Bodyguard. Harris is scheduled to give a talk and book-signing from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23 at the McMaster Center of Main Library, 325 Michigan St. The event is FREE and open to the public.
The program will begin with a 5:30 p.m. meet-and-greet in the McMaster lobby, followed by a talk given by Harris in the McMaster Center. Harris’ books will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the program, where the author will conduct a book-signing. Badge of Honor: Blowing the Whistle is a chronicle of Harris’ service in law enforcement and provides insight as to how he became involved in the infamous whistle blower text message scandal that surrounded the Kilpatrick administration. Harris says his book covers the corruption that he witnessed while protecting the former Detroit Mayor, which serves as a context to the honor and integrity that he brought to the badge. Harris adds that his new book also offers a thoughtful guide to anyone in law enforcement or the private sector who might consider blowing the whistle on corruption.
Previously serving with the Executive Protection Unit under Detroit Chief of Police Isaiah McKinnon, Mayor Dennis Archer and finally, with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Harris said he left the unit when he could no longer remain silent to the corruption going on in the Kilpatrick administration. Harris describes in his book what it was like to go from a decorated officer to having to resign from the department.
