(Released May 17, 2011) – The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and Vintage Aerial have teamed to publish a photo essay book titled Vintage Sylvania. The book of historical photographs, scheduled for publication in June, will present the City of Sylvania as it evolved from the imagination of two pioneers in the 1830s through the change and growth that have marked the last 30 years. A book launch party is scheduled at 6-8pm on Thursday, June 9 at the Sylvania Branch Library, 6749 Monroe St., Sylvania, OH. The public is invited to this FREE celebration.

The Library and Vintage Aerial have joined to launch the Vintage Communities Book Series. Vintage Sylvania is the first book and is published with the generous support of Lourdes College. Vintage Aerial conceived this Book Series as its principals reflected on the riches contained in the company's vast archive of historic aerial photographs. They believe the stories these photographs tell would be enhanced by presenting them in conjunction with the Library's collection of historical maps and photographs. The Vintage Communities project will include three books centered on distinctive communities in the greater Toledo area – communities whose stories of change, growth and loss are compelling and well told in Vintage Aerial's archives.

Vintage Aerial is a local company that provides museum-quality prints of historical photographs. The company uses its archives as the foundation for developing and preserving the history of rural America. The company's archives contain 25 million photos from 41 states, spanning the second half of the 20th century.

"In thinking about our archive, we realized that our photographs reflect powerful truths about the communities we live in, how they have changed, and how pieces of them have disappeared. This realization gave rise to the book project, which is a new way of sharing our archive and inviting our communities to participate with us in the collective enterprise of preserving our shared histories," said Fritz Byers, President and CEO of Vintage Aerial.

"We hope that the photographs within this book project feel in some way familiar, a comfortable call from the disappearing past," said Clyde Scoles, Library Director.

Judge William Wilson and General David White founded Sylvania in 1833, just 30 years after Ohio became a state and four years before Toledo was incorporated as a city. It was named for the dense forests that covered the area (Sylvania still has the distinction of being a Tree City).

Once published, Vintage Sylvania will be available for sale through local outlets.
