"KANBENG" ~ World Music & Dance Concert ~ June 18
ALMA Dance Experience is pleased to announce the upcoming presentation of “Kanbeng ~ A World Drum & Dance Concert”, an independently produced and funded, world music drum and dance concert, which brings together 4 local professional ensembles, comprised of 17 local, professional artists.
"Kanbeng" will take place Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Maumee Indoor Theatre, 301 Conant St, Maumee Ohio. Doors open at 7pm, and the show starts at 7:30pm. Tickets for “Kanbeng” are $10 in advance, and $15 at the door.
“Kanbeng” is a highly entertaining and unique world music and dance concert showcasing traditional West African Drum and Dance, Middle Eastern Dance and Music, Indian Dance, and African/Indian dance and music fusion. Featured performers in "Kanbeng" are the artists of “ALMA Drum & Dance” (almadancetoledo.com), “Leyla & Lapis Lazuli” (leylabellydance.com), “Raq the Casbah” (leylabellydance.com), and Shyam Suchak, with a dance ensemble from “Aha Dance” (ahadanceclasses.com).
We are also thrilled to be bringing in special guest artist, Morikeba Kouyate (http://morikebakoragriot.tripod.com/), the internationally acclaimed Senegalese Master Kora Artist. Morikeba's kora playing will be featured throughout “Kanbeng”. The kora is a stringed bridge harp used extensively by people in West Africa. The sound of a kora resembles that of a harp, though when played in the traditional style, it bears a closer resemblance to flamenco and delta blues guitar techniques. Kora players have traditionally come from griot families who are traditional historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass their skills on to their descendants.
“Kanbeng”, is the Manday language word for “get together”, and “Kanbeng” is the first of many large-scale collaborative productions that ALMA Dance Experience, under the Artistic Direction of Yaya Kabo, has planned, furthering the ALMA mission to share world dance and musical styles with our community, and to bring together artists from our community and beyond.
The unique collaboration between these local world music and dance ensembles and artists represents a bringing together of a wealth of talent from within our community, and the reach of our networks, as well as demonstrating the years of study, practice, and performance that each artist brings to the stage. These artists are your friends, co-workers, neighbors ~ "Kanbeng" is a show unlike any we've seen in Toledo, and shows the depth of talent within our world music performance art community.
