The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences will celebrate medical and graduate students at its commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3 in the Stranahan Theater.

There are 221 students who are candidates for degrees from the college, including 146 students who are candidates for the doctor of medicine degree. A total of 8 students will earn a PhD in biomedical sciences and 36 will receive master’s degrees. There are 10 candidates for combined degrees and 21 certificates.

Dr. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will receive an honorary degree and deliver the commencement speech.

“Every year we are excited to celebrate our graduates who will serve the health needs of their communities with the high-quality medical and graduate education and clinical experiences they received at UT,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, chancellor, executive vice president for biosciences and health affairs, and dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “Dr. Lavizzo-Mourey will serve as an inspiration to these future physicians as they, like her, aim to help people live healthier lives and get the care they need.”

Lavizzo-Mourey is well known as a national leader in transforming America’s health systems. She said she joined the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation because of the opportunity to “alter the trajectory and to push society to change for the better.”

She combines her experience as a physician with her business training to use the foundation’s resources to serve the public interest and help the most vulnerable. Among her priorities are designing a more effective health system, improving quality and safety of patient care, halting the rise in childhood obesity, covering theuninsured and developing the next generation of health leaders and policy-makers.

Lavizzo-Mourey previously served as senior vice president and director of the Health Care Group of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Prior to the foundation, at the University of Pennsylvania she served as Sylvan Eisman Professor of medicine and health care systems and director of Penn’s Institute on Aging. She also was deputy administrator of Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, which is now the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality in Washington, D.C.
