TMA Leader to Attend Getty Leadership Institute Program
TOLEDO, OHIO–Amy Gilman, associate director of the Toledo Museum of Art, has been selected to take part in the Museum Leadership Institute of the Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University in California.
“We’re delighted that our colleague Dr. Amy Gilman has been selected from a competitive field to attend the Getty Leadership Institute this summer,” said Toledo Museum of Art Director Brian Kennedy. “This program is rightly regarded as a true leader in the development of museum professionals from around the world.”
Gilman is among 30 individuals from seven nations and the only one from Ohio invited to attend the institute June 18–July 8. Since 1979, more than 1,000 museum professionals from the United States and 30 other countries have attended the institute.
Participants are chosen on the basis of their ability to influence policy and to effect change at their institutions. In addition to Gilman, this year they include senior leaders from prominent U.S. museums as well as from leading museums in Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and Qatar.
Course work at the institute covers strategic thinking, organizational behavior and the increasingly complex challenges museums face today. Topics considered include building public understanding, leading organizational change and motivating high performance. Case studies combine current events and trends within academic theory and best practices.
Gilman was named associate director at the Toledo Museum of Art earlier this year. She joined the Museum in 2005 as associate curator of modern and contemporary art after completing her doctorate in art history from Case Western Reserve University.
Since arriving in Toledo she has acquired important works for the collection and has been involved with TMA’s artist-in-residence program in the Glass Pavilion, which utilizes the unique nature of that facility both for artists traditionally trained in glass working techniques, and those new to and interested in experimenting in the medium. In 2009 Gilman began overseeing the Museum’s temporary exhibitions program as well.
Gilman earned her master of fine arts degree in photography from Columbia College Chicago and her bachelor’s degree in performance studies from Northwestern University. She grew up in Colorado and Texas.
