TOLEDO, OHIO – Although the Olympic Games are still a year away, Olympic fever will be on display in Perrysburg on Monday, August 1, and Northwest Ohio residents can be part of an eventful evening. Wrestlers from The Ohio Regional Training Center, the #1 wrestling training facility in the nation, will host their Northwest Ohio summer fundraiser next month and local Oak Harbor high wrestling favorite, J.D. Bergman, and ESPN broadcaster Chris Spielman, will be part of the action. WTOL-TV’s anchor Jerry Anderson will serve as master of ceremonies.
Along with former Ohio State Buckeye Spielman, athletes from the Ohio RTC will share their inspirational stories. Bergman, a 2003 graduate of Oak Harbor was recently named by USA Wrestling 2010 Freestyle Wrestler of the Year. Bergman has represented the United States in previous World Games and was a three time All-American while at Ohio State.
“Winning Olympic Gold has been my dream since I grew up in Northwest Ohio,” said Bergman. “Many of my earliest wrestling memories include people from Toledo, Oak Harbor, Perrysburg, Maumee and all the rest of Northwest Ohio. Those people helped fuel my dream and I hope they’ll come out and support us at this special event.”
The Ohio RTC’s goal is to support Olympic hopefuls in the sport of wrestling at the 2012 Olympic trials. The center hopes to send wrestlers in four of the seven weight classes. The organization, based in Columbus, provides world-class training opportunities for elite developmental athletes and is 501(c)(3) tax exempt.
The Ohio RTC earned first place at the U.S. Open tournament, becoming 2011 national champions. The center allows athletes to train full-time, including 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Henry Cejudo. Two members of the Ohio RTC will represent the United States in the World Games this summer in Turkey.
The August 1 event will be a fundraiser dinner featuring an elegant dining experience, silent and live auctions and inspirational program. The location is the Hilton Garden Inn at 6165 Levis Commons Blvd. in Perrysburg, Ohio 43551. Doors open at 6 p.m.
