The Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Santa Ana, Calif., Bill Medley grew up surrounded by music. His mother played piano and sang, while his father led a big band. Medley began his musical career in glee club and youth singing contests. After hearing the music of Ray Charles and Little Richard, Medley’s dreams of making it in the music business took shape.
After forming a group called The Paramours, Medley was introduced to Bobby Hatfield, head of The Variations and from there, The Righteous Brothers formed.
Recording first with Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound music production technique, the duo released “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” After parting ways with Spector, The Righteous Brothers began recording at Verve Records, and the first self-produced single for the new label, “(You’re My) Soul and Inspiration,” was released.
In 1987, Medley joined Jennifer Warnes on “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” for the film “Dirty Dancing.”
After earning an Oscar, a Golden Globe, Video of the Year and a Grammy, the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack became one of the most successful albums since Saturday Night Fever.
In 1990, “Unchained Melody,” by The Righteous Brothers, appeared in the hit film “Ghost.”
With “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Just Once in My Life,” “Ebb Tide” and “Rock & Roll Heaven,” the duo became a regular on Top 40 radio. For four decades, Medley and Hatfield were highlighted on both pop and R&B radio stations.
Not only did the group’s style of blues and rhythm help create “blue-eyed soul,” but The Righteous Brothers supported a new take on the 1960s pop romance genre.
The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, a few months before Hatfield’s death.
Medley made the decision to tour as a solo artist in honor of his former singing partner and close friend.
Medley’s album, Damn Near Righteous, is a tribute to legendary mentors and peers, including Hatfield. The album contains both original songs, as well as covers of a few classics.
