"Explore the Crafts" at Sauder Village - July 22 & 23
Guests of all ages will be invited to explore their creativity on Friday, July 22 and Saturday, July 23 at Sauder Village. During this special event, guests will be encouraged to try their hand at pottery, woodworking, blacksmithing, broom making, weaving and more! The “Explore the Crafts” event affords guests a greater appreciation of the talented craftsmen at Sauder Village, inspires guests to be creative, and provides great memories for all involved
During this fun-filled event, craftsmen will share their talents while allowing guests to explore their own creativity. Visitors may want to try making wooden tops, mini decorative brooms, felt balls, wool butterflies and tussie mussies, or shaping a bowl on the potter’s wheel. Some of the other hands-on activities planned for this event include assembling a wooden bucket, sewing a broom, weaving a rug and lace making. Guests can also make a cordage bracelet at Natives and Newcomers and participate in drawing activities. Guests over the age of 16 can help makes staves for a wooden bucket and even try blacksmithing. On Friday guests will have a chance to make a small tin heart cookie cutter in the Tin Shop and there will be a tin class on Saturday (pre-registration is required – details online at www.saudervillage.org).
New this year guests can register for the opportunity to make a glass ornament or a glass flower with the assistance of resident artist Mark Matthews and guest artist, Chad Balster. Pre-registration is required for the opportunity to learn the techniques needed to create this special glass piece. This 1 hour, hands-on class is available to anyone ages 10 and over and the cost is $45.00 ($40.00 for members) and includes supplies. Glass projects are not complete until the objects have gone through the annealing process, but the finished objects will be sent to the maker after the event. Special guests will also be on hand to showcase their skills during this popular event. Paul Nafziger will be demonstrating woodworking and Karen McGilvery will be demonstrating soap making.

Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and each Sunday afternoon from noon-4:00 p.m. The Historic Village is closed on Mondays, except holidays. Admission is $14.50 for adults and $7.50 for students ages 6-16. Children 5 and under are always free with family and Sauder Village members receive free admission to the Historic Village for an entire year. Senior, Military and AAA discounts are also available.
