Every year, the much anticipated and celebrated juried art extravaganza known as Art on the Mall gets a little bigger.

The 2011 event, to be held on UT’s Centennial Mall Sunday, July 31, will feature 117 artists along with eight food vendors and three musical groups.

“This is the 19th year for this show, and each year we strive to make this a better show than the previous year’s event,” said Ansley Abrams-Frederick, director of alumni programming with UT’s Office of Alumni Relations.

These artists specializing in acrylic, glass, jewelry, mixed media, oil, pen and ink, photography, pottery, textiles, fibers, basketry, watercolor and wood mediums will be displaying and selling their work from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the event.

Other nontraditional art pieces also will be featured at the outdoor art fair. These will include painted birdhouses, metal yard art, and handmade leather bags and purses.
The presenting artists are from Toledo and across the state of Ohio, and will be coming from Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

“Art on the Mall is one of the UT Alumni Association’s premier events,” Abrams-Frederick said. “We bring approximately 10,000 to 15,000 guests back to campus for this one-day show. It offers us the opportunity to showcase our world-class campus, highlight our successful and artistic alumni, and give the community a wonderful experience in a beautiful setting.”

Additionally, The Blade will sponsor a young artist area in the center of Centennial Mall for children to create their own artwork, receive face paintings, and engage in other activities and games. The Blade also will sponsor an active art demonstration that will take place at the steps of the Student Union, where ceramic artists will throw pots and create other works as their audience watches and asks questions.

The musical arts will be showcased during the event by students from the Toledo School for the Arts. The student group, Urban Jazz Collective, will play during the morning and early afternoon. The TSA Pop Combo will follow, and Glass City Steel will perform later in the afternoon. The musical performances are sponsored by ProMedica.

Festival food at the event will include Greek cuisine, hot dogs, shaved ice, smoothies, barbecue, kettle corn, elephant ears and funnel cakes.

Art on the Mall is sponsored by The Blade, Buckeye CableSystem, Toledo 5, Homewood Press, 92.5 Kiss FM and. 101.5 The River.

With the generous support of the sponsors, the event remains free and open to the public. Parking also is free with a courtesy cart shuttle service running from the lots to Centennial Mall for the convenience of visitors.
