UT’s Savage Arena Receives LEED Gold Enviro. Recognition
The renovated Savage Arena at The University of Toledo has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The Charles A. Sullivan Athletic Complex and John F. Savage Arena received the second highest LEED certification possible in the four-tier rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council that is internationally-recognized for identifying green building design, construction and operations.
The University will officially recognize the LEED gold accomplishment at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 with special guest Charles A. “Chuck” Sullivan, retired chairman, CEO and president of Interstate Bakeries Corp. and longtime supporter of the University who donated the lead $5 million gift for the renovation project. Joining Mr. Sullivan in the unveiling of the LEED gold plaque will be UT President Lloyd Jacobs, Athletic Director Mike O’Brien and Vice President for Administration Chuck Lehnert.
The arena, which opened as Centennial Hall in 1976, was renovated and the Sullivan Complex added in 2008 as part of The University’s Building Champions Campaign. The project included a total renovation of theplaying arena, as well as new locker rooms, a 3,000-square-foot training room and a 6,000-square-foot weight room.
A number of energy efficiencies and a robust recycling program during the demolition and construction contributed to the high LEEDrating.
The design used as much natural light as possible to reduce electricity use, electric heating elements under the basketball court were replaced with a hot water system and new efficient boilers were installed for that building that feed others on campus as well.
New control technology also was installed to operate systems only when needed, such as carbon dioxide sensors to turn on and off the airhandlers to bring in fresh air and motion sensors throughout the building to control light and temperature.
The Sullivan Complex and Savage Arena is the second UT facility to achieve a LEED gold rating. The Memorial Field House achieved that status in 2009.
The University of Toledo is committed to energy efficiency and targets at least LEED silver ratings for all construction projects.
