Toledo Museum Announces 93rd TAA Winners
TOLEDO, OHIO—Twenty-three awards were presented to Toledo-area artists Friday evening (Aug. 26) at the opening ceremony for the 93rd Toledo Area Artists Exhibition held in the Great Gallery at the Toledo Museum of Art.
The Best of Show Award went to Twin Risers by Thomas Muir of Perrysburg, Ohio. First Place awards were presented to Leslie Adams of Toledo, Ohio for Senzione: Self Portrait and to Muir for Twin Risers.
Adams was also invited to have a solo exhibition at the Museum in 2012. This is the first year an artist has been awarded this opportunity.
“Leslie Adams is a well-known portraitist who has painted distinguished individuals including former Ohio Governor Robert Taft Jr., university presidents, corporate CEOS and many others,” said Brian Kennedy, director. “The work she submitted to TAA was a self-portrait in profile in front of a light box illuminating MRI scans of her brain. It shows great technical skill, yet is highly personal and made us want to see more of Leslie’s more personal work.”
Out of 757 submissions, 66 works of art by 65 artists were selected to be a part of the show. Only northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan artists were eligible to enter.
Brain Kennedy, Toledo Museum of Art director, and Amy Gilman, associate director, served as judges for this year’s show. The juried exhibition, which offers an eclectic mix of works in a variety of media, is organized by the Museum with support in part from the Ohio Arts Council and Huntington Bank. Many of the special prizes awarded at the ceremony were sponsored by the Toledo Federation of Art Societies.
The show will be on view through Sept. 25 in the Canaday Gallery. Admission to both the exhibition and the Museum is free.
