Golden Retriever Rescue to Host Run and Walk on Sept. 17
On Sept. 18, Golden Retriever Rescue Resource will host its first annual Andy's Army Canine Cancer Walk and Run at Side Cut Metro Park, 1025 W. River Rd., Maumee, Ohio.
The event is the only of its kind in northwest Ohio to benefit canine cancer research. It will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a 5K run and 1-mile walk, and a light breakfast will be provided
The registration fee is $25 through Sept. 9 and $30 on event day. Kids under 5 are free. Pets are welcome to participate but must be leashed and current on vaccinations. To register online or to download a mail-in form, visit www.gr-rescue.org. Mail-in forms are also available at Sylvania Vet and South Suburban Animal Clinic.
This event is named in honor of Andy Bechtel, a GRRR rescue dog who was diagnosed with canine cancer 10 months after adoption and died in November 2009. Canine cancer is the leading cause of death among all dogs over age 2; half of all dogs over age 10 die from cancer. Breeds prone to cancer include golden retrievers, boxers, German shepherds, cocker spaniels, flat coat retrievers, West Highland white terriers, Rottweilers, Doberman pinchers, schnauzers, Bernese Mountain dogs, great Danes, greyhounds, and standard poodles.
All funds raised for research will go to the Ohio State University, Michigan State University, and Colorado State University.
For additional information about this event, call Sue Bechtel at 419.875.5272.
