The Fort Meigs Bentley Lecture Series
Join Dr. Bruce Way, University of Toledo, on Thursday, September 15th as he discusses Lewis Cass' experience in the War of 1812. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public. Dr. Way will discuss Cass' role in General William Hull's expedition and the surrender of Detroit in 1812, and his later role under the command of General William Henry Harrison. Learn how Cass' subsequent appointment as "administrator" and Territorial Governor, led him to the conclusion that any significant American occupation of the Northwest was going to be seriously hampered without better communication links.
Dr. Way is on the faculty at University of Toledo, where he earned his Ph.D. His current position is split between the departments of History and French. Bruce's interest in the War of 1812 comes from both his background as a U.S. 19th-Century generalist and his work in Canadian Studies. He helped organize an 1812 speaker’s series at Monroe County Community College while on staff there, and continues to be involved in the War of 1812 by participating in the Great Lakes War of 1812 Bicentennial Collaborative.
The Lecture will be presented at Fort Meigs in the visitor center located at 29100 West River Road in Perrysburg, Ohio on Thursday, September 15th at 7:30 PM. The program is sponsored by the Anderton Bentley Fund in memory of Christopher Perky, who served at Fort Meigs during the War of 1812.
