The University of Toledo will observe Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, with several events designed to highlight the culture.

“Hispanic Heritage Month 2011 includes an array of programs and activities that will celebrate the Latino culture. It’s an exciting time for everyone in involved, especially the students who take part in organizing and planning the month-long celebration,” said Sabina Elizondo-Serratos, associate director of the Office of Student Involvement. “We invite our campus community to join us as we educate others, celebrate each other, and embrace one another through our vibrant Latino culture.”

The Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off Celebration will take place 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Student Union Rooms 2582 and 2584. Dr. Isabel Escobar, UT professor of chemical and environmental engineering, and interim assistant dean for research and development in the College of Engineering, will be the keynote speaker. Authentic Mexican lunch will be served.

Events will continue throughout the month with "Salsa on the Steps" Sept. 21 with the Latino Student Union and Ballroom Dance Society, the making of Piñatas on Sept. 26 with the Nu Chapter of the Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc. and The History of Latino Immigration on Oct. 10.
