Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept 24!

Join the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library for its annual National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. To kick off this celebration, at 10:30 a.m. the Library will honor local and national Hispanic leaders (see below for names of honorees).

Bring the entire family to help celebrate at this FREE event! Parking is also FREE for all participants.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs September 15 through October 15, and helps celebrate Hispanic heritage and honor the independence of the Latin American countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, both Mexico and Chile are independent. The Library has observed National Hispanic Heritage Month for more than 15 years.

Schedule of activities at Main Library:
· Gallery exhibit – Display of images and biographies of local and national Hispanic leaders (On view beginning September 15, the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, through September 26). (Gallery)

· 10:30 a.m. – Welcome – Honoring local Hispanic dignitaries by Mistress of Ceremonies Angi Gonzalez, anchor/reporter at WNWO/NBC24 News (Wintergarden)

· 11 a.m. – Toledo Salsa – Dance presentation (Wintergarden)

· Noon – Cooking Demonstration – Featuring Lina Barrera and Syndi Guerrero. Come and sample a variety of mouth-watering foods including corn chowder soup with roasted tomatillos and poblana peppers, Mexican Rice, and shredded chicken with lime and rehydrated chilies served on warm corn tortillas. · 1:30 p.m. – Children’s Crafts with local artist Delfina Zapata (McMaster Lobby)

· 2 p.m. – Salsa contest (Sample and help judge this contest which will award the best Library branch salsa, made by Library staff) (McMaster Lobby)

· 3 p.m. – Program Concludes

Program Highlight:

A special Main Library Gallery exhibit in honor of the 25th anniversary of the National Hispanic Heritage Awards ( www.hispanicheritage.org ) will kick off September 15, the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, and run until September 26. This display honors the following local and national Hispanic leaders:

Local Gallery Honorees:
· Santiago “Jimmy” Bejarano, Sr., Tejano Conjunto Hall of Fame inductee
· The late honorable Judge Joseph A. Flores
· Anita Lopez, Lucas County Auditor
· Lourdes Santiago, City of Toledo Law Department Senior Attorney
· Luis Santiago, Toledo Fire Department Chief

National Gallery Honorees:
· Isabel Allende, Author
· The late Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”, Actor
· The late Cesar Chavez, Farm Labor Organizer
· Shakira, Singer/Dancer/Philanthropist
· The honorable Sonia Sotomayor, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice

Local Artist Gallery Feature:
In addition, the Gallery will feature the work of local artist Delfina Zapata, who describes her portraits and drawings as a “celebration of human life.” Zapata, who is majoring in Art Education at the University of Toledo, uses mixed media to create her works of art, (“Panadero”, “Mariachi”, “Delfina’s Kiss” and more), and prefers acrylic as her paint of choice.
The Library is honored to highlight Zapata’s art during this most important observance.
