"Many Trails of Tears: The Removal of the Ohio Tribes"
Join Dr. Mary Stockwell, Lourdes University, on Thursday, October 20th as she discusses the removal of Indian tribes from Ohio, starting in the 1820s. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM and is free and open to the public. Dr. Stockwell will share information she gathered for the content of her new book “Many Trails of Tears: The Removal of the Ohio Tribes,” due to be published in the fall of 2012. The book, and Mary’s talk, tells the story of the Delaware, Seneca, Shawnee, Ottawa, and Wyandot between the death of Tecumseh in 1813 and the removal of the last Indians from Ohio thirty years later. She makes the point that while today most people equate Indian removal with Andrew Jackson and the Cherokees, Ohio's historic Indian tribes were also part of the process. She will also show that more people than Andrew Jackson -- Americans and Native Americans alike -- were responsible for the removal of the Indians from Ohio. Ohio's Indian tribes went down "many trails of tears" to Kansas and Oklahoma -- some willingly but others unwillingly -- from the 1820s to the 1840s.
Dr. Stockwell is a scholar on several topics including the Early American Republic. She has written and presented on Anthony Wayne, William Henry Harrison, and James Madison. Dr. Stockwell was selected in 2006 as a Senior Scholar of the Gilder Lehram Institute of American History. She received her PhD in History from the University of Toledo as well as master’s degrees in Philosophy and History from the same institution.
The Lecture will be presented at Fort Meigs in the visitor center located at 29100 West River Road in Perrysburg on Thursday, October 20th at 7:30 PM.
