Library to host Ohio Library Council 2011 Convention & Expo

(Released October 10, 2011) – The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is honored to host the 2011 Ohio Library Council (OLC) Convention and Expo scheduled October 26 through 28 at the SeaGate Convention Centre and Park Inn Hotel Toledo, and Main Library, 325 Michigan St.

The three-day affair expects to attract more than 500 registrants, mainly from Ohio’s 251 public libraries. Keynote speakers, programs, events and exhibits have been designed to stimulate the imagination, entertain, and help registrants connect with colleagues, said Meg Delaney, Chair of the 2011 OLC Convention and Expo. “Librarians and information professionals from around the state are gathering to hear the very best thinking related to how people use and manage information. This is a time to think big thoughts,” said Delaney, the Humanities Manager of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library.

Each day has its own keynote session, beginning with the country’s leading futurist Thomas Frey scheduled at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday,October 26 in the Grand Ballroom of the Park Inn Hotel. Author of the 2011 book Communicating with the Future, Frey is a powerful visionary who is revolutionizing our thinking about the future. As the Executive Director and Senior Futurist at the DaVinci Institute,www.davinciinstitute.com he works closely with the Institute’s Senior Fellows and Board of Visionaries to develop original research studies, which enables him to speak on unusual topics, translating trends into unique opportunities.

As part of the celebrity speaking circuit, Frey continually pushes the envelope of understanding, headlining events with some of today’s most recognizable figures. His keynote talks on futurist topics have captivated people ranging from high level government officials, executives in Fortune 500 companies, and librarians.
Because of his work inspiring inventors and other revolutionary thinkers, the Boulder Daily Camera has referred to him as the “Father of Invention”. The Denver Post and Seattle Post Intelligencer have referred to him as the “Dean of Futurists”. Before launching the DaVinci Institute, Thomas spent 15 years at IBM as an engineer and designer where he received over 270 awards, more than any other IBM engineer. He is also a past member of the Triple Nine Society (High I.Q. society over 99.9 percentile).

Frey has been featured in hundreds of articles for both national and international publications including New York Times, Huffington Post, Times of India, USA Today, US News and World Report, The Futurist Magazine, Morning Calm (in-flight magazine for Korean Airlines),Skylife (in-flight magazine for Turkish Airlines), ColoradoBiz Magazine, Rocky Mountain News, and many more. · Other OLC Convention and Expo speakers include digital guru David Lee King on Thursday, October 27, and “coach of all things creative” Artie Isaac on Friday, October 28. Additionally, there will be hours of programming along nine different learning tracks. The Blade’s Outdoors Editor Steve Pollick and graphic artist Jeff Basting will speak at the Wednesday, October 28 luncheon, and storyteller and writer Shutta Crum will speak at the Thursday, October 27 luncheon. Continuing a long-standing tradition, OLC’s Awards and Honors luncheon is scheduled on Friday.
· A convention reception is scheduled Thursday, October 27 at Main Library, 325 Michigan St., featuring hot jazz, light fare and dessert, a cash bar and tour of the building including the Friends of the Library store – Classics Gift Shop – and the Target/Mazza Museum traveling exhibit SPEAK! in the Gallery.
· Other highlights include an E-mail Café, Convention Store and Gadget Gallery for registrants; the Pat Carterette Tribute 5K Joyous Job and Merry March; breakfasts for Kent State and Wayne State alumni; a tour of the newly renovated Kent Branch Library and cybermobile, and so much more.
