Herstories: An Evening with Patrice McClellan
(Released October 12, 2011) – Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Incorporated (Zeta Alpha Omega Chapter) joins the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library in presenting Herstories: An Evening with Patrice McClellan scheduled from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, November 21 in the McMaster Center and Lobby at Main Library, 325 Michigan St. Please SAVE THE DATE.
McClellan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and Director of the Masters of Organizational Leadership program at Lourdes University, will discuss her debut book Herstories: Leading with the Lessons of the Lives of Black Women Activists (Black Studies and Critical Thinking), which she co-authored with Judy Alston, Professor and Chair of the Department of Leadership Studies at Ashland University.
The authors state that their book analyzes the transformational leadership, servant leadership, and social justice leadership found in the lives of great black women in history, such as Fannie Lou Hamer, Septima Clark, Mary McLeod Bethune, Shirley Chisolm, Barbara Jordan and Audre Lourde. The book chronicles the careers and professional contributions of these women, and also uses these leadership models as units of analysis to highlight their effective leadership “herstories” to inform current practice.
McClellan will begin the evening with a discussion and read passages from her book beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the McMaster Center. After her talk, a brief Q & A session is planned, followed by a presentation from the AKA Book Signing planning committee. The event will conclude with a book signing by McClellan. Lourdes University officials will handle the sale of Herstories, available for purchase at a cost of $35 per book.
“We as active members of the local chapter of AKA thought it to be extremely vital to honor our accomplished sorority sister Patrice McClellan for her debut book,” said Clara Petty, president of the AKA Zeta Alpha Omega chapter. “Our sorority, the oldest black collegiate sorority in the country, was founded in 1908 and is complete with many powerful women and plenty of “herstories” like the one’s highlighted in McClellan and Alston’s book. This upcoming book signing allows our sorority, the Library, Lourdes University and the community to celebrate McClellan as our sister, and the ‘herstories’ outlined in her work.”
This event will provide FREE parking, and light refreshments in the McMaster Lobby
