Exhibition Opening
European Expressionist and Cubist Works on Paper
Dec. 2, 2011–March 11, 2012, Gallery 18 The early 20th century was a period of great innovation in style and graphic technique and in the exploration of new subjects, ranging from modern society to poetic fantasies and highly personal allegories of human existence. Drawn from the TMA collection, this exhibition features prints, illustrated books and drawings from France and Germany in the first decades of the 20th century and includes work by Picasso, Matisse, Kollwitz, Kirchner, Kandinsky and others who emerged or came to maturity during this time. Art history students at the University of Toledo organized this free exhibition.

Continuing Exhibitions
Small Worlds
Nov. 18, 2011–March 25, 2012, Canaday Gallery Five contemporary artists from the United States and Japan offer engaging works that create an intimate space or environment or show scenes which are familiar but perhaps slightly askew. The drawings, relief paintings, photography and sculpture deal with issues of scale, setting up an intimate interaction between object and observer. Artists include Gregory Euclide, Charles Kanwischer, Lori Nix, Tabaimo and Joe Fig. Made possible by members of the Toledo Museum of Art, the exhibition is supported in part by The Andersons, Lathrop Company and the Ohio Arts Council. Admission is free. A free companion digital catalog is available online, and a print publication can be purchased at the Museum Store.

Focus Exhibition: In the Beginning: King James Bible First Edition Through Dec. 31, 2011, Gallery 15 To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible, the Toledo Museum of Art is displaying rare first edition copies of the book that are part of its collection. One of the most familiar and widely read translations of the book worldwide, the King James Bible is both a religious and a literary classic. Only a few first edition copies still exist. This focus exhibition features two first editions—one of them complete—along with interpretive material that addresses the book’s importance from differing viewpoints, including those of a book collector, an historian and a theologian. Admission is free.

The Egypt Experience: Secrets of the Tomb
Through Jan. 8, 2012, Lower Level Egyptian Gallery, Main Museum More than 150 objects spanning 3,000 years of history are on display, including objects from the Museum’s antiquities collection and from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Field Museum, Indiana University Art Museum and the Oriental Museum Institute of the University of Chicago. Admission is free for TMA members and children under 6 years of age; admission for nonmembers is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors over 65, and $5 for students ages 6 to 22. The exhibition is made possible by the generosity of TMA members and with support in part from Taylor Cadillac, Buckeye CableSystem and the sustainable grant program of the Ohio Arts Council.

Storytelling in Miniature
Through March 4, 2012, Works on Paper Galleries Approximately 140 miniature prints from the Renaissance through the modern era from the Toledo Museum of Art collection are featured, including works on paper by Albrecht Du?rer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Charles Meryon and others. Admission is free. A free companion digital catalog is available online.

FREE Presentation: The Rise and Fall of Kush, an African Kingdom on the Nile 7:30 p.m., Little Theater Arising in about 2000 BC in a fertile stretch of the Nubian Nile valley (modern-day Sudan), the kingdom of Kush based its wealth and power on its gold mines and trade contacts with Egypt to the north. As its wealth, military power, and alliances expanded, Kush posed a significant threat to Egypt itself. After being conquered by the Egyptian empire of the New Kingdom, Kushite kings would rise again, ruling as Egypt’s 25th Dynasty, and establishing an empire that would last until about AD 350. Geoff Emberling, an archaeologist and former director of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, highlights recent work on the kingdom of Kush, particularly excavations in that have given new insights into its gold. The program is co-sponsored with the Archaeological Institute of America- Toledo Society and the Museum.

FREE Presentation: God and Shakespeare Speak Early Modern English Dec. 4: 2 p.m., Cloister Well-known University of Michigan scholar and popular speaker Ralph Williams will discuss the publication of two great English works aimed at national and personal reconciliation in 1611—the King James version of the Bible and Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. The King James Bible drew on translations from the preceding millennium and was influenced by the scholarship of contemporary groups hostile to one another. Shakespeare’s language has roots in virtually every area of English life—a life torn by religious tension, political intolerance, and terrorist plots emerging from both. Together, the King James Bible and the plays of Shakespeare could be said to have ?created? the English language, and their great harmonies both contain and adjust the discords they wish to quell. A professor of English, language and literature, Williams has studied 15 languages, including Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic. He specializes in Medieval and Renaissance literature, Shakespeare, literary theory, comparative literature and Biblical studies.
