ACGT Celebrates 8th Year of Art in TARTA Program
Six new bus wraps will be unveiled during the Art in TARTA gallery event on Sunday, December 11, 2011. The buses are newly wrapped with original and locally created graphic designs and poetry inspired by the theme of "Restore Planet Earth: Our Universal Sun," the fourth year of the “Restore Planet Earth” initiative. The Art in TARTA gallery event will be the first chance to view all of these new moving works of art before they drive throughout the region on their daily routes. The gallery event will be held from 2 to 4pm in the Parkwood Gallery. The event will include a gallery exhibition of the awarded poetry and designs in addition to music, refreshments, and an award recognition ceremony, commencing at 3pm.
Apprentices from the Young Artists at Work program and students of the Bowling Green State University Graphic Design Department have participated in the competition, contributing respectively their writing and design talents. The Art in TARTA program showcases the talent of this region, bringing moving works of visual and literary arts into every community in the region, thereby encouraging and inspiring community pride and appreciation of the arts.
The Art in TARTA program began in the summer of 2004. Over the past 7 seasons the Art in TARTA competitions have encouraged an exploration of various themes: Bridges (The Veterans' Glass City Skyway), Jazz (the famous Art Tatum), Glass (The Glass Pavilion), and Restore Planet Earth.
Willie Rough (TARTA), Nick Muska (Toledo Poets Center), Andi Coulter (local poet), and Imani Lateef (local poet) served as this year's jurors selecting the best “Restore Planet Earth: Our Universal Sun” poetry submitted by the Young Artists At Work apprentices. Patricia Levey (The Arts Commission), Marc Folk (The Arts Commission), Dustin Hostetler (The Arts Commission and local graphic designer), Stephen Atkinson (TARTA), and Merce Culp (local graphic designer) served as jurors selecting the best “Restore Planet Earth: Our Universal Sun” graphic designs created by BGSU graphic design students.
The Art in TARTA gallery event is free and open to the public. The gallery exhibition will be on display in the Parkwood Gallery December 11 - 23, 2011. The Parkwood Gallery is open 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday thru Friday and is located at 1838 Parkwood Avenue, on the corner of Parkwood and Monroe.
