Historic Date Observed Jan. 17 at Toledo Museum of Art
When the Toledo Museum of Art was established in 1901, it consisted of two rented rooms in the Gardner Building in the city’s downtown. The Museum’s iconic building with its beautiful Greek columns at 2445 Monroe St. opened to the public for the first time more than a decade later—on Jan. 17, 1912.
Area residents are invited to attend a ceremony at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this historic event. A cake replica of the building will be on display, and free refreshments will be served in Libbey Court. Parking also will be free.
In addition, the 100th visitor to the Museum that day will receive a prize package. The package includes a $100 Toledo Museum of Art gift card, a one-year family membership valued at $75, two tickets to the Toledo Symphony performance of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” in the Peristyle on either Feb. 3 or Feb. 4, and four tickets to an Art Hour session of the recipient’s choice.
Meantime, everyone is urged to share memories of their visits to the Museum. Visitors may jot down their memories on forms available in the Herrick Lobby. Those with Internet access are encouraged to share their memories on the Museum’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
Admission to the Toledo Museum of Art is free. Learn more about the Museum and its history at http://www.toledomuseum.org/
