March 2012 TMA Program Highlights
Continuing Exhibitions
Storytelling in Miniature
Through March 4, 2012, Works on Paper Galleries
Approximately 140 miniature prints dating from the Renaissance through the modern era from the Toledo Museum of Art collection are featured. Some prints are so small that a magnifying glass is required to appreciate them fully. Artists represented include Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Charles Meryon and others. A free companion digital catalog is available online. Free admission.
European Expressionist and Cubist Works on Paper
Through March 11, 2012, Gallery 18
Organized by art history students at the University of Toledo and drawn from the TMA collection, this exhibition features prints, illustrated books and drawings from the early 20th century, including works by Picasso, Matisse, Kollwitz, Kirchner, Kandinsky and others. Free admission.
Small Worlds
Through March 25, 2012, Canaday Gallery
Small Worlds approaches the idea of “small” from many perspectives through the work of five artists and sometimes the finished works themselves aren’t small at all. The microcosms created in these works of art deal with issues of scale, setting up an intimate interaction between object and observer. Artists include Gregory Euclide, Joe Fig, Charles Kanwischer, Lori Nix and Tabaimo. A 65-square-foot Tumbleweed Tiny House, on display near the Monroe Street entrance to the Museum, also is part of the exhibition. Small Worlds is made possible by members of the Museum and is supported in part by The Andersons and the Lathrop Company. Free admission.
On View in the Community Galleries
Quest for Fire Studios
Through March 22, 2012, Community Gallery
The artists of Quest for Fire Studios, inspired by the Small Worlds exhibition, create works related to scale and perception based on their own unique worlds. Viewers will feel both large and small in relation to these objects in a variety of media. Some artists will show other work as well. Current and relevant, the work of these active local artists always makes for a dynamic exhibition. Free admission.
Special Events & Presentations
FREE Masters Series Lecture: Jay Shafer: Tumbleweed and the Tiny House Movement
March 8: 7 p.m., Peristyle
Jay Shafer, founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company and a recognized leader in the small living movement, is the first speaker in the Toledo Museum of Art’s 2012 Masters Series Lectures. A designer specializing in sustainable architecture and urban planning, he conceived of “little buildings” in 1997 for economical reasons, both practical and personal. In addition to concerns about the impact of ever-larger houses on the environment and maintaining unnecessary space in his own living quarters, he says, “The simple, slower lifestyle my homes have afforded is a luxury for which I am continually grateful.” Shafer will talk about the growing movement toward living smaller and simpler.
FREE Presentation: Dragons of the North: The World of Viking Longships
March 16: 7:30 p.m., Little Theater
Viking ships are among the most remarkable artifacts in the realm of archaeological discovery, dominating European history between 800 and 1100 AD. They were used as warships, trading craft and vessels of exploration and colonization. An ambitious project in the field of experimental archaeology has involved the reconstruction and sea trials of many Viking ship types. John R. Hale, director of liberal studies at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, traces the ancestry of Viking ships all the way back to sewn-plank canoes of the Scandinavian Bronze Age, and shows the links between these remarkable ships and the watercraft of the Pacific and central Africa. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Toledo Museum of Art and the Archaeological Institute of America–Toledo Society.

FREE Small Worlds and the Artistic Process: Lori Nix and Charles Kanwischer
March 23: 7 p.m., Great Gallery
Amy Gilman, associate director of the Toledo Museum of Art and curator of Small Worlds, leads a conversation with artists Lori Nix of New York City and Charles Kanwischer of Waterville about the process they use to create their work. Kanwischer earned a BFA in printmaking from the University of Iowa and an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University School of Art, but his preferred medium is graphite pencil. He is an associate professor of drawing at Bowling Green State University. Nix is inspired by historical landscape painting and Romanticism and by recollections of natural disasters in her home state of Kansas. She constructs detailed dioramas that she then photographs.
