Lourdes University is pleased to announce its 2012 Ecumenical Lecture “Church Authority and Ecumenism: Obstacle or Opportunity” on Sunday, March 25, at 3 p.m. in the Franciscan Center in Sylvania. The guest lecturer is Dr. Richard Gaillardetz who currently holds the Joseph Chair in Systematic Theology at Boston College. In his presentation, Dr. Gaillardetz will explore the deeper issues underlying questions of church authority in ecumenical dialogue and will propose some practical measures that might advance ecumenical conversation on the topic.

For 10 years, Dr. Gaillardetz served as the Margaret and Thomas Murray and James J. Bacik Professor of Catholic Studies at The University of Toledo. He received his Ph.D. in systematic theology from the University of Notre Dame and has published over 80 articles and authored 8 books. Other accomplishments include being given the Sophia Award in 2000 from the faculty of the Washington Theological Union in recognition of “theological excellence in service to ministry,” and serving as an official delegate on the U.S. Catholic-Methodist Ecumenical Dialogue from 2001-2005.

The Lourdes University Ecumenical Lecture Series was established in 1983 by former Lourdes Presidents Sr. Marie Andrée Chorzempa, OSF, and Sr. Ann Francis Klimkowski, OSF. “We wanted to foster an ecumenical atmosphere,” offers Sr. Ann Francis. “That atmosphere still exists today and has expanded to an interfaith approach with both the Jewish and Muslim communities being featured as well.”

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Benjamin Brown, Assistant Professor of Theological Studies, at 419-824-3946 or email [email protected].
