Kidney Foundation Supports Local Patients
The Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio (KFNWO) aims to raise awareness on the impact of kidney disease, which is among the top ten leading causes of death in Northwest Ohio. Currently, more than 13,000 Ohioans receive dialysis for treatment, of those; nearly 4,000 are in Northwest Ohio.
“As the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, Type II diabetes, hypertension and obesity continue to rise, so are the number of patients we see experiencing chronic kidney disease that need our support,” said Holly Hoagland-Fojtik, executive director of the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio.
“KFNWO prides itself on providing the help our patients need, whether through medical assistance or transportation to dialysis treatments, to help improve the quality of their life as they manage this disease,” said Hoagland-Fojtik.
Since 2008, KFNWO has seen a 65% increase in the number of patients relying on their services. Which include transportation to and from dialysis, nutritional supplements, medical equipment and financial and prescription medication assistance to manage the disease. The need to continue this support is growing as more people become chronic kidney disease patients.
“As a three-time kidney transplant recipient who has lived with kidney disease since I was 18, I am truly grateful for the support and services I was able to receive thanks to the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio,” said Sarah Satkowski. “They were able to provide me and my family the care and assistance I needed to better understand my dialysis needs and knowing that their efforts are focused on improving the lives of people right here in our community really means a lot.”
As part of the effort to raise awareness and funding to support local patients, KFNWO will be hosting its 10th annual Kilometers for Kidneys Walk on April 1, 2012 at the Huntington Center. The Kilometers for Kidneys Walk is a great family event featuring a 5k walk, kids zone, complimentary health screenings and other activities to benefit KFNWO’s patient services programs.
“We are excited to engage the public and our patients at the Kilometers for Kidneys Walk to demonstrate how important it is to be educated and aware of this disease. We are looking forward to a great event and raising funds that will allow us to continue offering the programs and services many in the Toledo-area living with kidney disease rely on,” said Hoagland-Fojtik.
