FREE Masters Series Presentation: Vesuvius and the Villa: New Discoveries Near Pompeii

John Clarke, a noted professor of Greek and Roman art and architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, will discuss his excavation work near Pompeii, which was buried in a massive volcanic eruption in 79 CE. One of the world’s top scholars on Pompeii, he co-directs the Oplontis Project, a collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Pompeii and the King’s Visualisation Lab (King’s College, London), which is conducting a systematic study of a huge luxury villa that dates 50 BC-CE 79. Clarke has published seven books and more than 75 essays, articles and reviews. FREE Presentation: Irish Myth and the Sacred Landscape

Between the tenth and twelfth centuries, scholars catalogued Irish mythological locations and their histories, and these came to be known as the dindshenchas. These stories typically feature one or more of the gods of the pre-Christian Irish and in many cases, the places mentioned can be linked with known prehistoric sites. The tales carried a level of meaning considered significant. Ronald Hicks, professor of anthropology at Ball State University, discusses the relationship between the myths, the sites and the annual agricultural and calendrical cycle of Ireland.
