FREE Visiting Glass Artist Presentation: Nancy Callan and Ethan Stern

Nancy Callan and Ethan Stern are spending a week collaborating and developing new ideas in the world-class TMA Glass Studio. In addition to this presentation, they share their processes with the public during regularly scheduled demonstration time. Stern, originally from Ithaca, New York, received the “Best Emerging Artist” award from Tacoma, Washington’s Museum of Glass and has established himself as a major emerging artist in contemporary glass sculpture. He studied ceramics at the TAFE Institute in Brisbane, Australia, later transitioning from ceramics to glass while enrolled at Alfred University in New York. He later explored effects he could achieve through engraving and carving while at the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the country, and he has taught at some of the most notable art schools in the country. Callan, a Boston native, began her career as assistant to Lino Tagliapietra. She remains a key member of the maestro’s glassblowing team and travels internationally as his assistant. Her own work combines the skill and finesse of the Venetian tradition with the wit and aesthetic sensibility of a contemporary artist. Although her work features highly refined forms and complex patterns, a sense of play and fun is equally prominent. Callan has garnered numerous awards, and her work is found in permanent collections of museums and art collectors around the world.
