Toledo Museum of Art Joins Google Art Project
The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) is partnering with Google in its expanded efforts to give people around the globe an opportunity to view some of the world’s finest works of art.
The expansion of the Google Art Project and the partnership with TMA is being announced by company and Museum officials on Tuesday (April 3) at news conferences around the world. TMA is among 29 partners in 16 U.S. cities invited to participate in the second phase of Google’s Art Project and the only one in Ohio. Worldwide, 151 museums and university galleries in 40 nations are involved.
Thanks to Google, art lovers everywhere now can discover an array of the finest artworks from a wide range of cultures throughout the world. More than 30,000 high resolution images of objects are available for viewing, up from the original 1,000 objects from nine museums when the Art Project was initially launched. Now it’s just as easy to visit the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi and the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
The Google Art Project and TMA share a common mission, according to Museum officials. “Our purpose at the Toledo Museum of Art is art education. We want to make our art collection and programs available to as many people as possible,” said Brian Kennedy, director of the Museum.
“We are delighted to be among the select museums that are part of this new phase of the Google Art Project,” he continued. “The Toledo community knows that its Museum, which has free admission year-round, is a gem. We are excited that people around the world now will have the opportunity to view some works from our superb collection online.”
More than 100 works from TMA’s collection are readily accessible with a few simple clicks. They include such outstanding masterworks as Houses at Auvers and Wheat Field with Reaper, Auvers by Vincent Van Gogh, Crowning of Saint Catherine by Peter Paul Rubens, Two on the Aisle by Edward Hopper, Water Lilies by Claude Monet, Architect’s Dream by Thomas Cole and Vitrana by Dominick Labino.
The Google Art Project’s enhanced features enable users to browse content by the artist’s name, artwork, type of art, museum, country, collection and time period. A “Create an Artwork Collection” feature allows users to save specific views and build their own personalized collections. The launch of this next phase of the project also brings it to the tablet, with support for the Android platform. An iPad version will be ready soon, according to company officials.
