Sinatra This Weekend With Toledo Jazz Orchestra
On April 14 at the Valentine Theatre, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra presents The Music of Frank Sinatra with Mark Randisi.
This TJO season finale stands out for several reasons.
First, this program marks the public debut of the orchestra’s new Toledo Youth Jazz Orchestra. Students from throughout northwest Ohio will play side-by-side with their professional counterparts for several tunes.
Second, the TJO will honor founding member, writer/arranger and former artistic director, Dave Melle. Dave’s arrangements of beloved Sinatra tunes will be featured.
"Dave Melle was a driving force for jazz in NW Ohio," says friend and colleague Marty Porter. "His award winning bands at BGSU and his personal performance reputation as one of the best woodwind doublers around earned him the respect of every member of the TJO."
"His intense love for the music and his skill in bringing a band of prima donna jazzers together helped lead the TJO for a decade," added Porter.
Additionally, April is national Jazz Appreciation Month sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, and this year’s featured artist is none other than Frank Sinatra. More information on Jazz Appreciate Month can be found at Smithsonianjazz.org.
Finally, this concert stands apart from the crowd in that the TJO will perform arrangements written for the original Sinatra Big Band by Nelson Riddle, Quincy Jones, Don Costa, Billy May, Patrick Williams, and Gordon Jenkins. These treasured arrangements define the Sinatra sound we all know and love.
Charts will include Luck Be A Lady, Fly Me To The Moon, I Get A Kick Out Of You, The Best Is Yet To Come, and of course, My Way.
Tickets are available by calling 419-242-2787 or visiting TheToledoJazzOrchestra.org. Tickets start at only $20.
