Summer Means Animal Feeds & More

Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 by: Andi Norman | Category: Arts and Entertainment

Summer is almost here, and no one knows how to enjoy it like your Toledo Zoo. Starting Saturday, May 26, fun activities create a whole new experience every day of the season.

It starts with animal feeds and enrichment demonstrations. From orangutans, penguins and otters to hornbills, snakes and sharks, you can watch your favorite animals chow down or interact with keepers and enrichment objects. It’s fun for visitors to watch and meaningful for the animals, too. This is one way the Zoo encourages naturalistic behaviors and stimulates the animals’ senses. Animal feeds and enrichment demonstrations are free with regular Zoo admission. The full schedule is on the Zoo’s website at toledozoo.org/feedings.

In Nature’s Neighborhood, the award-winning children’s zoo, you’ll discover even more programs! The Play Stream is open for the summer, along with animals in The Forest, an interactive green screen in Jumpin’ Junction and kids’ programs in The Workshop. Outdoors at the Fisher-Price® Little-People® Discovery Stage, you’ll enjoy daily stage shows with animal stars and even meet the animals afterward. The Contact Yard lets you get up close to some groovy goats, and indoors, guinea pigs are waiting to meet you. Nature’s Neighborhood activities are free with regular Zoo admission.

Also opening for the season, starting June 2, is the Zoo’s Butterfly Conservation Center. Each day, visitors can take free guided tours at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to learn more about native butterflies and see Zoo staff at work helping to protect them. The Butterfly Conservation Center will be open through Sunday, July 29.

Additional activities offered throughout the summer at a separate fee include Behind-the-Scenes Tours, Giraffe Feedings, Safari Express train tours, African Animal and historic carousel rides. Returning this year by visitor demand are two meal experiences that save you time and energy so you can enjoy your Zoo visit even more: Picnic on Safari and Safari Sandwiches.

It’s all part of bringing you a great Zoo experience at a remarkable value. Learn more at toledozoo.org.
