Lourdes' Lifelong Learning Summer Programs
Beginning this June, the Lourdes University Lifelong Learning program is kicking-off its 2012 summer program featuring a variety of new classes and outings. Lifelong Learning is an educational, engaging and fun way to learn! Learn a little or a lot this summer in the following Lifelong Learning activities:
Fused Glass
June 12 – 10 a.m. to Noon
Join instructor Amanda Rabara in creating a colorful flower stake to accent potted plants or outdoor landscaping and a glass pendant. No experience necessary! $40 for members / $50 for non-members.
Historic Photographs
June 13, 20, and 27 – 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Instructor Christine Myers, PhD will take participants on a journey through the invention of photography in the 1800s. Dr. Myers will discuss both the development and accessibility of photographic technology and the ways in which historic photographs can be interpreted (or misinterpreted) by today's researchers. Consideration will also be given to digital preservation and search methods available in the 21st century. $30 members / $35 non-members.
Introduction to Ceramics
June 14, 21, 28, July 12 – 5 to 7 p.m.
Instructor Kristin Baldeschwiler will introduce participants to the medium of ceramics, focusing on hand-built methods (rather than using a pottery wheel). Learn about different varieties of clay, tools, and methods of construction. Students will create pinch and coil pots, slab-built platters and bowls, and decorative household items. $40 members/ $50 non-member plus $25 materials fee.
Shipwrecks of Lake Erie – Fire, Storm, Collision
June 28 (meets once) – 2 to 3 p.m.
Lake Erie has perhaps the largest concentration of shipwrecks per square mile of any body of water in the world. From the 1700's to the present a variety of military and commercial vessels have been lost on her waters. Instructors Mike & Georgann Wachter will explore wreck types with their stories in chronological order. $10 members / $15 non-members.
Polish-American artist Adam Grant, Master Figure Painter
Sunday, July 1 (443rd anniversary of the formation of the First Polish Republic)
Leaving from the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University at 8:30 a.m.
Adam (Grochowski) Grant began painting in Warsaw but ultimately Toledo became his home. A Roman Catholic survivor of Nazi concentration camps, his paintings demonstrate his fascination with human conditions ranging from destruction to rebirth. The classical nude became his forte, along with acrobats and musicians, revealing his humor, soulfulness, and dramatic flair. Grant was also the first designer of the popular "Paint-by-Numbers" paint sets!
Enjoy a bountiful Polish buffet and presentation by David G. Chelminski, Ph.D., Adjunct Instructor, Department of History, Political Science and Geography at Lourdes University. Then tour the Adam Grant exhibition with the artist's wife, Mrs. Peggy Grant at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart Indiana. $25, all expenses included. Cosponsored by the Toledo Poznan Alliance.
Lunch with the Stars
Tuesday, July 10 (meets once) – 11 a.m.
Discover the history of the telescope and the discoveries these wonderful tools have made in the world of Astronomy. See how telescopes work and how the largest observatories in the world use these instruments to explore the mysteries of the universe. Explore the Galilean Moons, Saturn's rings, spiral galaxies, and learn about the discoveries of Galileo, Huygens, Newton, Hubble and many others. $15 members / $20 non-members, includes lunch.
History of the Olympics
July 11, 18, 25 – 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Get an inside look at the history and development of the Olympics before the 2012 London Games begins in July. Dr. Myers will review the history of the modern Olympic Games since they started in 1896. Emphasis will be placed on the Summer Olympics, and in particular the politics and controversies surrounding them, which often had little to do with the sporting events themselves. The course will also take a special look at the London Games in 1908 and 1948 and the final preparations for 2012. $30 members / $35 non-members.
On Golden Pond
July 12 – 10:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
It's a classic American play with love, laughter, and three generations. See On Golden Pond performed live at the Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea Michigan. Lunch before the show will be at the elegant Common Grill restaurant. To whet your appetite before lunch, we will tour the Jiffy Mix factory or you may enjoy an hour of shopping in the artistic shops of Chelsea's Main Street. $55 members / $65 non-members, lunch not included.
Lifelong Learning is an exciting educational program at Lourdes University. Open to all interested men and women, the only requirement for participation is an interest in ongoing learning. Lifelong Learning participants enjoy classes on a wide variety of academic subjects, educational field trips known as Roadrunners and monthly meetings featuring guest speakers.
