Watch it Grow Garden Tour Series
Stroll through the Toledo Zoo’s beautiful gardens and see how they grow, bloom and change throughout the season. Different aspects of gardening will be highlighted each month, along with historical information about the gardens, greenhouses and Conservatory.
These hour-long walking tours are free with regular Zoo admission and are scheduled on the third Wednesday of the month, June through September, at 10:30 am. Reservations are not required; just meet at the Conservatory at 10:30 a.m. and be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Visitors are welcome to attend any or all sessions. Master Gardeners receive one hour of continuing education credit for each tour attended.
June 20 – Shade Gardening: Learn how to use annuals, perennials, spring bulbs and ground covers to make your shady areas come alive with color.
July 18 – Attracting Birds and Butterflies: Attract birds and butterflies to your garden by using Zoo horticulturists’ time-tested tips.
August 15 – Container Gardening: Get some secrets to successful container gardening from the creators of the Zoo’s container gardens which impress visitors year after year. Tour includes tips on plant selection, containers, soil, fertilization, maintenance and “avoiding the thugs.”
September 19 – Trees and Shrubs: Tour the Zoo’s extensive trees and shrubs, focusing on horticulturists’ personal favorites, and learn what will work best in your garden. Species featured are the tri-color beech tree, hydrangea shrubs and many more, from black gum tree and tulip trees to boxwood and winterberry shrubs.
This summer, the Zoo is open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Zoo is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo. Valid ID showing proof of residency is required.
