Perrysburg native and internationally known historian/author Douglas Brinkley will speak at Way Library, 101 E. Indiana Avenue in Perrysburg, on Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 7 p.m. on the main floor of the library. This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Brinkley, prolific author and TV commentator who also serves as professor of history and fellow at the James Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, will speak about the opening of the War of 1812 (200 years ago on June 18, 1812) the historical significance of our region, and about his new book, a biography of Walter Cronkite. Copies of “Cronkite” will be sold and signed by the author after his talk.

Dr. Brinkley spoke at Way Library in 2006 for the library’s 125th anniversary celebration. This time we are honored to have the noted 1978 graduate of Perrysburg High School speak, 200 years, almost to the day, after the start of the War of 1812. Historic Perrysburg and Fort Meigs State Memorial are co-sponsors of this special event.

This conflict shaped the history of our area. Growing up in Perrysburg, Doug Brinkley was fascinated by history. After graduating from the Ohio State University, getting a PhD at Georgetown and beginning his college teaching career, he wrote in 1993 about his C-span-televised educational trips with college students in “The Majic Bus: An American Odyssey,” and went on to author these books, among many others: “American Heritage History of the United States” (1998), “Rosa Parks” (2000), “Wheels of the World: Henry Ford” (2003), “The Boys of Pointe du Hoc” (2005), “The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina” (2006), “The Reagan Diaries” (edited in 2007), “The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt” (2009), “The Quiet World: Saving Alaska’s Wilderness Kingdom” (2011) and, finally, “Cronkite” (2012).

“And that’s the Way it is.” To borrow news anchor Walter Cronkite’s nightly newscast summary, Way Library is the setting: Doug Brinkley will bring history alive in his unique way. Join us in appreciating our historical roots and keep alive the quest to understand our past heritage. Refreshments will be served at this free event.
