Toledo Zoo Names Jeff Sailer as New Executive Director
Following a nearly five-month search, this evening the Toledo Zoo Board of Directors announced the selection of Jeff Sailer as the Zoo’s new executive director, effective August 1.
“Mr. Sailer brings extensive zoo experience and is exceptionally qualified to direct the Toledo Zoo,” said Zac Isaac, president of the Toledo Zoo’s Board of Directors. “We’re delighted to welcome him to our community and fortunate to have such a person in this important position as the Zoo moves forward.”
Mr. Sailer holds a master’s degree in zoology from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ball State University. Currently he is the director of city zoos with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in New York, where he oversees Central Park, Prospect Park and Queens Zoos; together, these zoos receive more than 1.6 million visitors each year. Prior to joining WCS, Mr. Sailer was the curator of birds for the Miami Metrozoo, where he helped plan and develop a new 1.5-acre Asian-themed aviary and built up a world class bird collection. He has also traveled throughout the South Pacific studying island ecosystems and the avifauna inhabiting them.
“I am excited to accept this great opportunity. The Toledo Zoo has a wonderful reputation in the zoo field,” Mr. Sailer said. “I’m looking forward to working with the staff of the Toledo Zoo and living in this wonderful community."
Mr. Sailer was one of two finalists selected by a search committee. The search committee consisted of members from various facets of the community, including community and business leaders, a veterinarian, a higher education representative, Board members and a Zoo employee. President of the Zoo’s Board of Directors, Zac Isaac, chaired the committee.
“The final selection was difficult,” Mr. Isaac said. “Both finalists are highly qualified, and each offered extensive Zoo experience as well as a stellar professional reputation. The decision eventually came down to which person had the best fit for the organization, and we are honored to welcome Mr. Sailer to the Toledo Zoo.”
