TOLEDO CHOSEN FOR NEW IMAGINE ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOOL

When was the last time your child took a walk in the woods for math class or hiked down to the creek for a social studies lesson? At Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School, opening this fall, students will actively learn in classrooms and the outdoors on the school’s 17-acre wooded campus that was the former Our Lady of Lourdes parish school.

“Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School is a tuition-free public school with a private school atmosphere. High academic standards will integrate environmental science into a Standards-based, challenging curriculum that fosters knowledge, love of and respect for our earth, and the will to preserve it for future generations. The learning will robust and relevant to the real world,” Adrianna Chestnut, principal at Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School, said. “If your child enjoys fresh air, exploring in the natural world, and learning while doing, Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School is just what you’ve been looking for,” Miss Chestnut said. “But it’s not just about environmental science. Language arts, mathematics, social studies, art, music, health, and physical education will all be a part of our daily course of study. Our students will have the opportunity for extensive hands-on, inquiry and project-based learning to apply their knowledge while exploring the great outdoors under the guidance of our 100% highly qualified teachers,” she said.
“For example, when studying the forest as an introduction to ecosystems, students don’t just read about it in a book, they explore the biological and physical health of the stream ecosystem right outside on the beautiful, natural area surrounding the school,” she explained.

Miss Chestnut said that Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School is focused on providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere that is family-focused and encourages parent participation.

“Working parents dealing with day care issues will find an easy solution at Imagine Hill Avenue with our quality before- and after-school programming,” Miss Chestnut said. “Before and after school programming at Imagine Hill Avenue will allow parents to drop off students early on their way to work and give students a safe, fun and supportive place to stay after school and play and get homework done, Monday through Friday during the school year,” she said.
The school will also offer free summer school and free tutoring.
Imagine Hill Avenue, like other Imagine Schools, will have a school-wide positive behavior support system which encourages students to be safe, kind and respectful. “Our Imagine Schools’ Shared Values of Integrity, Justice and Fun bind us together,” Mrs. Marlene Mills, Imagine Schools Regional Director, said. “Integrity drives us to live the same values outside the school as we do inside and care for all people. Justice does not mean sameness but that each person deserves to be treated uniquely and appropriately. We believe that each person was born to use his or her mind, heart and skills to take actions, make decisions and be held responsible for the results. With this belief, we strive to make school as fun and successful as possible,” Mrs. Mills said.
Imagine Hill Avenue, an elementary school, will open this coming school year.
It is located at 6145 Hill Avenue and is the third Imagine school to open in Toledo in five years. Imagine Schools have been growing steadily in enrollment since opening the first Imagine school in Toledo, Imagine Clay Avenue Community School, located at 1030 Clay Avenue, in 2007. Imagine Madison Avenue School of Arts, 1511 Madison Avenue, opened in 2008. Both Imagine Clay Avenue and Madison Avenue schools expanded last year, but the waiting lists continued to grow at both schools as more parents selected Imagine Schools as an alternative to traditional public schools.

“We started with just 130 students when we opened in Toledo and now have over 1,000 students and we are adding a third school. Over the last five years, many Toledo parents have chosen Imagine Schools for their children’s education. Parent choice and satisfaction have led to Imagine Schools’ phenomenal growth and we are very excited that Toledo was chosen for the next new Imagine School. Families new to Imagine who are considering enrolling their children at Imagine Hill Avenue can look forward to working with a visionary school leader with Miss Chestnut and a joyful learning environment,” Mrs. Mills said.

Open enrollment (all new applications for the 2012-2013 school year) is now in progress for all three Imagine schools, including Imagine Hill Avenue Environmental School. Please call Hill Avenue principal Adrianna Chestnut at 419-729-1500 for more information. Imagine Madison Avenue School of Arts (Grades K-5) can be reached at 419-259-4000. Imagine Clay Avenue Community School (Grades K-8) can be reached at 419-727-9900.

Miss Chestnut said that Imagine Hill Avenue students will receive extended learning time for math and reading along with the thematic instruction on environmental science. In addition to its innovative approach to curriculum and instruction, Imagine Schools utilize a longer school day and a longer school year. Imagine Hill Avenue, as do Imagine Madison Avenue School of Arts and Imagine Clay Avenue Community School, offers free tuition, free tutoring and free summer school.

“Our Imagine students make incredible learning gains,” said Mrs. Mills. “On average, Imagine Schools students make more than one year’s learning growth in a school year, as supported by 2010-2011 Scantron testing data.”
