Toledo Zoo Offers Aquarium "Bon Voyage" on Aug. 11

Posted: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 by: Andi Norman | Category: Arts and Entertainment

The Toledo Zoo’s Aquarium is closing soon for renovations, but you’re invited to a Bon Voyage celebration on Saturday, August 11, marking the history – and the future – of this historic exhibit. The celebration is free with regular Zoo admission.

On Saturday, August 11, educational kids’ activities will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with historical Aquarium photos and conceptual images of the new Aquarium. Additional activities include:

10:30 a.m. Shark feed
11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Behind-the-scenes open house
2 p.m. South American tank dive and feed
3 to 4 p.m. Behind-the-scenes open house

The Aquarium was one of the last Zoo structures built by Works Progress Administration (WPA) crews, opening in May, 1939; preserving this external architectural heritage is an important part of the renovations. Inside renovations will feature floor-to-ceiling tanks, touch tanks and expanded visitor interaction.

The Aquarium is scheduled to close on October 1 and reopen in the first half of 2015. Details are at toledozoo.org.
