Call For Artists: Artist Designed Bike Racks Phase 2
Background Information
The Arts Commission is pleased to announce the Call for Artists for the second phase of the Artist Designed Bike Racks Project. The first phase of the project saw ten new pieces of functional sculpture placed along the Adams Street Corridor in the UpTown neighborhood in the spring of 2012. These works of public art offer an added visual aesthetic to the neighborhood while offering residents and cycling enthusiasts a useful tool that helps to promote cycling in the burgeoning arts and entertainment district. The second phase of the project will continue the program into the Warehouse District neighborhood, often identified as one of Downtown’s strongest arts-friendly neighborhoods.
Call for Artists
The Arts Commission is seeking designs for Phase 2 of the Artist Designed Bike Racks project. Similar to the Uptown District phase of this initiative, they are looking for designs for bike racks that can accommodate two bicycles, one on each side of the rack (similar to traditional “U” shaped racks) and that will represent Toledo’s unique aesthetic and cultural identity. Designs are now being accepted for this project and all local artists are encouraged to participate. Ten designs will be chosen and winning designs will hit the streets in spring, 2013.
- Winning entries will receive a $500 honorarium.
- Selection – Designs will be chosen by a design review board made up of arts advocates, bicycle advocates, and community stakeholders.
- No fabrication skills needed – The Arts Commission will be responsible for fabrication and installation of winning entries.
- The competition is open to all artists working in the following counties; Allen, Defiance, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Wood, and Wyandot counties in Ohio, and Lenawee and Monroe counties in Michigan, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability.
