Composer and performer Ken Thomson will bring his acclaimed ensemble Slow/Fast to the Clazel Theatre on Nov. 26 as part of the Music at the Forefront concert series sponsored by Bowling Green State University’s MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music. The concert, featuring new jazz compositions, begins at 9 p.m. at 127 N. Main St. in Bowling Green. A donation of $2-$5 at the door is suggested. The event is sponsored in part by the Department of Jazz Studies at the College of Musical Arts.

Slow/Fast combines the sounds of chamber jazz and improvisational freedom with the coherence of contemporary classical composition, with an often distortion- laden twist. Coming from his background of performing with his punk/jazz quartet Gutbucket, co-directing the experimental marching band Asphalt Orchestra, performing with chamber orchestra Signal, and having composed for the American Composers Orchestra and Bang on a Can, Thomson brings a unique perspective to the ensemble’s music. It is long-form and through-composed, with deliberate spaces for improvisation. The group has performed across New York City at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Winter Jazzfest, and traveled to the Midwest to perform at the Detroit Institute of the Arts and more. Individual members have performed at prominent jazz festivals worldwide.

Music at the Forefront is an annual concert series featuring performances by accomplished and innovative performers of contemporary music. For more information, contact Kurt Doles at the center at 419-372-2685 or by email at [email protected].
