BLISSFIELD, MI (Dec. 5, 2012) Like caroling around a bonfire, drinking cider and tasting wine grown from local grapes? Then join the Blissfield DDA/Main Street on Friday, December 14 from 5-8 p.m., for the Second Annual Wassail Festival, presented by the Blissfield Rotary Club.

Wassail is a traditional English beverage made for the holiday season to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. “Wassail” is an Old English word meaning “to your health.” Visiting homes to toast with Wassail was a charm to bring a prosperous year. All the wine used to prepare this year's taste-testing Wassails comes from Blissfield’s own J Trees Cellars.

“I’m excited to be involved again with the Wassail Festival as the exclusive provider of wine for the event," said Jon Treloar, founder of J Trees Cellars. "I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the creative minds of our community come up with for Wassail recipes.”

To participate, stop by the “Welcome Booth” located in Mohr’s Barber Shop at 112 S. Lane St. in downtown Blissfield, and purchase a commemorative 2012 Wassail Festival ceramic mug for $12. Festival-goers also receive a punch card for rating each Wassail, a wristband, and a walking map indicating locations for each of the 11 merchants who will be serving different versions of Wassail. Please note: participants must be 21 years of age or older to participate. For those Festival attendees under 21, hot chocolate will be available at Cakes ‘n Shakes.

In addition to taste-testing Wassails, there will be two fire-pit warming stations where carolers can sing familiar Christmas carols. The Cynnabar Collegium Musicum carolers will be dressed in medieval costumes and will sing traditional songs of the holiday season.

At the end of the night, a 2012 Wassail Festival trophy will be given away to the “Best Wassail.” The trophy will awarded at B-Town Bar & Grill, where the Blissfield Rotary Club will also pull the winning ticket for its “Free Gas for a Year Raffle.”
