The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s Waterville Branch Library in partnership with The Waterville Area Arts Council is pleased to announce the scheduled unveiling of a community glass mosaic project at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 26 at the branch located at 800 Michigan Ave., in Waterville, OH.

Over the course of two months last fall, Waterville residents were invited to participate in the making of a 13-by-6-foot mural, using thousands of pieces of bright-colored glass. Mosaic artist Gail Christofferson, who resides near Bowling Green, led the art sessions, and Waterville artistAlison Quinn, a recent Ohio University graduate and Waterville resident, was selected as the project’s illustrator.

Over this past weekend, Christofferson started installing the project located in the Circulation area of Waterville Branch Library. Christofferson is a self-taught mosaic artist that is known for her glass mosaic vintage windows, and large community-based installations.www.animalhouseglass.com

In a Blade interview published August 7, 2012, Quinn, who has received a number of awards for her design work and photography, said her childhood was spent exploring the Waterville Branch Library, where books opened up an array of adventure for her creative mind. Quinn’s illustration, selected from a large field of entries, represents how reading opens up the world to people of all ages.

Lisa Exner, president of the Waterville Area Arts Council, now in its second year, said the council came up with the idea of a community art project and contacted Christofferson, who has experience working on other mosaic mural projects, including one in the Ostego school district. Exner is the co-owner of the Silver Lining Gallery in Waterville.

Karen Wiggins, manager of the Waterville Branch Library, said she and her staff were looking for an art project for her building. She added that Waterville Branch Library is normally closed on Saturdays, but will be open to the public for regular business from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the scheduled date of the unveiling on January 26. The unveiling of the community glass mosaic is scheduled promptly at 11 a.m.

Friends of the Waterville Library made the final selection of the design.

The Waterville Area Arts Council coordinated the new mural project free of charge; material costs and other expenses were covered by the Library Legacy Foundation of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. Waterville Friends of the Library were also a contributor and sponsor of the project.
