February is Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month
February is “Adopt a Rescued Rabbit” month and the furry friends at the Toledo Area Humane Society are hopping with excitement and anticipation of finding forever homes. To help their cotton-tailed friends adjust to their new homes, all rabbits adopted during the month of February will take home a care package including hay, a water bottle, and other rabbit-friendly goodies (while supplies last).
Rabbits make great pets for those who live in an apartment or who are unable to have a dog or cat in their home. They are social animals and can provide companionship similar to that of a dog or cat. Rabbits are most active during the morning and evening, which corresponds well with many people’s work schedules. While you’re at work, rabbits are content to stay in a large cage or puppy pen and then frolic around in a bunny-proofed space when you get home. Many people are not aware that rabbits can also be easily trained to use a litter box, helping to keep their environment easy to clean.
Additionally, if you’re looking for a pet to help you keep your New Year’s Resolution to eat healthier, a rabbit is a great companion to help keep you on track. Since rabbits are herbivores whose diets consist mainly of fruits and vegetables, having a pet that encourages you to keep your refrigerator stocked with plenty of fresh produce can really help keep your resolution on track.
Rabbits are often viewed as “starter pets” for young kids or are purchased spontaneously as pets at Easter time. However, many of those rabbits are later surrendered to animal shelters and humane societies to find new homes. It is important to remember that like dogs and cats, rabbits require proper diet, exercise and veterinary care to thrive. With proper care, rabbits can live between 10-12 years and make great a great addition to your family.
The Toledo Area Humane Society is open Tuesday through Friday from 11am – 7pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 6pm. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization they are committed to the welfare of animals by providing temporary shelter and care while seeking permanent homes. Donations from local individuals, corporations and monies generated by fundraisers and earned revenue are a major source of funding for the Toledo Area Humane Society.
