FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Toledo, Ohio – January 30, 2013
Astronomer, Artist Tyler Nordgren Speaks Feb. 13 at Ritter Planetarium, Exhibits Photos at CVA on Feb. 15
The Department of Physics and Astronomy presents a free, public lecture by visiting astronomer and photographer Tyler Nordgren in Ritter Planetarium on Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. Titled “Capturing Natural Night,” Dr. Nordgren’s talk will explore his photography of night skies in National Parks and what we learn from "parks after dark." This talk is aimed at an audience with a general knowledge of astronomy and appreciation of nature photography.
The Department of Art will present an exhibition of Nordgren's photographs of the night skies at the Center for Visual Art's Clement Gallery February 15 through March 15. A public reception will be held at the CVA on Friday, February 15 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Professor Nordgren, of the University of the Redlands, has written the book Stars Above, Earth Below: A Guide to Astronomy in the National Parks. Nordgren works with the National Parks Service to educate visitors about the night sky and what we can learn about space from the geologic forms and processes of Earth. The National Parks suffer from less light pollution than most other parts of the country. In this darkness, he is able to take long-exposure photographs of the night sky and its stellar views.
The lecture at Ritter Planetarium on February 13 at 7 p.m. is free and open to the public. Seating at the lecture is given on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ritter Planetarium is located on the University of Toledo's main campus on W. Bancroft St. The photo exhibition at the CVA's Clement Gallery is also free and open to the public; following its opening February 15, it will remain on display through March 15. The CVA is located on the campus of the Toledo Museum of Art, at 620 Grove Place.
