Toledo Area Artists Best of Show: Brandon Briggs
Two dozen awards totaling over $8,000 in value were announced Friday (Feb. 1) during an evening awards ceremony for the 94th Toledo Area Artists Exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.
The juried multi-media exhibition opened to the public immediately following the award announcements and will be on display through April 14 in the Works on Paper Gallery.
This year’s show, which was open to artists living within a 150-mile radius of Toledo, attracted 642 submissions. In the past, only those living in seven counties in northwest Ohio and southern Michigan could enter. Judges Joe Fig, an artist, and Kate Nesin, a Mellon Fellow at the Museum, picked the 94 entries that are on display.
Winning the 2013 “Best of Show” honors was Brandon Briggs of Bowling Green, who received $1,000 for his oil painting Threshold. His entry also won the $500 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award in painting.
The $500 Second Place Award went to Jessica Summers of Findlay for her oil painting Cooking in Pajamas: Portrait of My Mother.
The $500 Third Place Award went to Nicole Pelc-Church of Tecumseh, Mich., for Little Fingers, an acrylic painting on panel. Little Fingers also won the $450 Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Purchase Award.
One of the longest-running exhibitions of its kind in the nation, the Toledo Area Artists Exhibition is organized by TMA with support from Huntington Bank and the Ohio Arts Council to encourage artistic excellence and provide opportunities for Museum visitors to interact with and see the work of local contemporary artists.
Admission to the exhibition and the Museum is free.
Artists whose work is seen in the show are eligible to be considered for a solo exhibition at the Museum, an honor presented at every other TAA exhibition.
