Bob Seeley Rocks UT for Tatum Jazz Scholarship
Bob Seeley, often called the greatest living boogie-woogie pianist, will be the guest soloist at the University of Toledo's annual Art Tatum Scholarship fundraiser. The concert is Tuesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in the UT Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.
Tickets for the Art Tatum Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert are available at the door the night of the performance. Prices are $15 for general public and $5 for students, seniors and UT faculty and staff.
The concert is a benefit for the Art Tatum Memorial Jazz Scholarship Fund, which benefits musically gifted undergraduate music majors of color, preferably a jazz pianist. The scholarship was established in 1994 and endowed in 2002 by various donors, including the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society.

Boogie-woogie is a form of piano-based blues, characterized by a heavy left-hand bass line. Seeley’s personal connection with Art Tatum goes beyond his respect for and inspiration from the piano master. As a young man, Seeley worked as Tatum’s chauffeur and played piano with him.
Art Tatum was born and raised in Toledo. His speed and precision at the piano are legendary, as is his mastery of boogie-woogie, stride, andswing. In 2009, the "Art Tatum Celebration Column," a monumental sculpture by artist Cork Marcheschi, was dedicated to Tatum's memory. Black and white, it evokes the tinkly magic of dancing piano keys, from its perch in front of the Huntington Center on Madison Avenue at Superior Street. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Tatum's birth, the Toledo Jazz Society was renamed the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Society.
